November’s Charity of the Month: Dreams Unlimited
For many parents of children who are physically disabled, trying to plan a family vacation that everyone can enjoy is often very difficult. It is for this reason that Dreams Unlimited — a nonprofit organization that provides recreational activities for children with disabilities — is committed to providing activity-based vacations for families who otherwise many never have the chance to enjoy the joys that a family vacation offers.
The MDRT Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to Dreams Unlimited to fund its annual Winter Ski Trip to the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, Colorado. This grant was sponsored by Stephen D. Andersen, RHU, a 36-year MDRT member and Diamond Knight from Lincoln, Nebraska.
During the Winter Ski Trip, children and their families receive ski lessons from specially-trained instructors so that they can enjoy the freedom of the slopes using accessible ski equipment. Families stay in lodgings on site, and have the chance to network with other families.
Children aged five and older who have diagnoses that include cerebral palsy, autism, neurological disorders and vision and hearing impairment attend the Winter Ski Trip.
Since 1999, Dreams Unlimited has partnered with the National Sports Center for the Disabled and other local organizations to provide recreation activities such as hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, basketball for children and families throughout Lincoln, Nebraska.
