July's Charity of the Month: Little Children of the World

Little Children of the World

Each year, Michael R. Mignano, CLU, ChFC, a six-year MDRT member, boards a plane destined for the Philippines. This trip is not for rest and relaxation. Mignano makes this journey to deliver much-needed school supplies, sanitation products, clothing and food to some of the most vulnerable children who live and work on the streets in the southern region of the Philippines.

Mignano, of West Linn, Oregon, is a volunteer for Little Children of the World (LCW), a nonprofit organization that provides health and educational resources to children living in extreme poverty. Little Children of the Philippines (LCP) is a subsidiary of LCW, and serves children and families in the coastal town of Hinunangan, located in the province of Southern Leyte, Philippines.

The MDRT Foundation awarded a USD 2,500 grant to LCW, in honor of the dedicated volunteerism of Mignano. This grant will be used to fund LCP’s HELP program, which provides medical, nutrition and sanitation programs, educational and agrarian training resources to children and their families throughout Dumaguete on the island of Negros.

Mignano not only travels at his own expense to the Philippines each year, he also coordinates fundraising and awareness efforts for LCW throughout this own community.

One of LCP’s most successful programs is the educational resource center that provides books and reference materials to children and their families. This resource center allows children to spend time doing homework and receive tutoring from volunteers in a safe place. LCP promotes education as a way to break the cycle of extreme poverty that is rampant in this small agrarian community.

According to UNICEF, more than 150 million children worldwide spend their childhood living on the streets. These children are at increased risk of malnutrition, communicable diseases, abuse and neglect. Since 1989, LCP has provided community–based programs to help 'rescue' children who otherwise would be forced to beg and live in unimaginable conditions in order to survive
