October's Charity of the Month: The Timmy Foundation

The Timmy Foundation

A rare meeting with Mother Theresa in 1997 inspired Charles J. “Chuck” Dietzen, M.D., a pediatrician from Indiana, to do more to help people in underserved communities worldwide.

Upon his return from this volunteer orthopedic medical trip, Dietzen founded The Timmy Foundation — a nonprofit organization that provides funds for sustainable medical care projects in some of the poorest communities in developing countries.

The MDRT Foundation awarded a $2,500 grant to The Timmy Foundation to fund health care programs in Ecuador. This Quality of Life grant was awarded in honor of eight-year MDRT member, Mark Wise of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Wise is a member of the Timmy Foundation’s Board of Directors and is committed to fundraising and increasing awareness of the Timmy Foundation’s efforts. “[Wise] is one of the Timmy Foundation’s active and energetic supporters,” explained Lynne Hughes, Chair of the Timmy Foundation’s Board of Directors. “He has hosted fundraising events in his home, collected and distributed medical equipment and supplies and organized medical service trips.”

The Timmy Foundation’s primary goal is to provide people in underserved communities with access to medical care. Each year, volunteer teams of medical care professionals travel to communities to work with local clinics and hospitals. By working with local health care facilities and professionals, the Timmy Foundation ensures that health care does not end when the volunteers leave.

In addition to providing medical care, the Timmy Foundation also donates medical supplies and equipment to the health care facilities they work with. By using a medical records system, the Timmy Foundation tracks the treatment of all patients served, which helps ensure the continuation of care for people with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
